DTU Building 208

A REIMAGINED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The Transformation of DTU Building 208’s 7,000 m² has been carried out with a focus on future learning environments, sustainability and digitalisation.

The original building from 1967, designed by architects Eva and Nils Koppel, has undergone a significant transformation. With respect for the original architectural quality, the building has been modernised to meet contemporary requirements for Education and study environments.

Building 208, which originally consisted of traditional auditoria and laboratory facilities, has been enhanced with modern teaching spaces, support laboratories and increased areas for staying and social interaction. The Transformation included openings through floor slabs, the addition of new vertical connections and improvements to daylight conditions.

Technical installations have also been upgraded, including new ventilation systems. Sustainability has been a guiding principle throughout the project, supporting the achievement of DGNB Platinum certification as well as DGNB Diamond and DGNB Heart.

A MORE VIBRANT AND CONNECTED ENVIRONMENT
A key aspect of the Transformation has been the improvement of daylight conditions. To open up what was previously a relatively dark building, window openings have been enlarged and additional rooflights introduced.

Staying areas have been relocated towards the façades and their extensive glazing, creating a more vibrant and connected environment where students and staff can orient themselves across rooms and floors while maintaining a visual connection to the surrounding landscape.

The preservation and reuse of existing materials and furnishings have also been central to reducing the building’s carbon footprint and maintaining its architectural coherence. Durable materials such as concrete, brick, slate and timber ceilings have been preserved, reused or reinterpreted elsewhere within the building.

The original auditorium furniture has been carefully restored and reinstated within the upgraded facilities.

STATE-OF-THE-ART LEARNING
The result of the Transformation is a state-of-the-art learning environment that supports DTU’s ambition to set the standard for future learning environments.

The building now accommodates a wide variety of teaching methods and social activities, creating the framework for a vibrant and inclusive study environment.

The new design places strong emphasis on sustainability, an improved Indoor environment and a high degree of user involvement. As a result, Building 208 stands as a benchmark for modern learning environments while respecting its architectural heritage.
