DESCRIPTION
WELCOME TO THE CULTURE HOTEL
Herning Folk High School, originally constructed between 1960 and 1962 and granted listed status in 2018, has been transformed into the High-Rise Cultural Hotel – an ambitious refurbishment project that combines architectural heritage with modern functionality.
The total building area comprises 6,200 m², of which the tower accounts for approximately 2,500 m² and the remaining facilities approximately 3,700 m².
Designed by Tyge Arnfred and Viggo Møller-Jensen, the building served as Herning Folk High School for 45 years.
Today, the modern cultural and hotel facility accommodates hotel rooms (56 single rooms and 26 double rooms), a lecture hall, library and cafeteria, and functions as a meeting place where art, culture and people come together.
TECHNICAL MODERNISATION AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY
The refurbishment has been carried out with preservation and careful restoration as guiding principles. As a result, only minimal interventions have been made to the load-bearing structures.
The technical challenge lay in bringing the original building services up to modern standards without compromising the integrity of the listed building.
Technical installations, including electrical systems, plumbing and ventilation, have been modernised, while the building envelope has been upgraded to support energy-efficient Operations with full respect for the building’s listed status.
LOCAL ROOTS AND A SUSTAINABLE FOCUS
The project was driven by the ambition to combine sustainability with cultural heritage, both in the completed building and throughout the refurbishment process itself.
Local contractors and materials were prioritised in order to reduce environmental impact, and the outdoor areas have been revitalised with features such as raised planting beds and grazing sheep.
The overall architectural identity has been preserved, while the functions have been opened up to the public. As a result, the High-Rise now serves as a hotel, cultural centre and local meeting place.
The project demonstrates how technical expertise and engineering knowledge can support the sustainable Transformation of culturally significant buildings while preserving their historic value.
