A “NEW” OLD MUSEUM
The Psychiatric Museum in Middelfart is undergoing a transformation that will see MIND become a museum spanning three architectural eras.
The classical period is represented by the original building designed by Royal Building Inspector Vilhelm Petersen, while additions from the 1960s reflect a period of modernisation.
Through the current transformation, past and present are brought together in a unified story of a historic building.
The transformation is being carried out with great care and places particular emphasis on creating coherence and flow throughout the building, both aesthetically and functionally.
The different periods that have shaped the building will be highlighted and allowed to merge seamlessly into one another, underlining the story of the building’s 111-year history as a psychiatric hospital.
Non-original walls are therefore being removed, while period-specific colours and interior elements from both the original 1890 building and the 1970 refurbishment are being reinstated.
At the same time, the first floor is being modernised with larger contemporary white exhibition spaces, helping to communicate the story of a building shaped by 1890, 1970 and the present day.
In addition to modernising the museum facilities and exhibition spaces and creating access to the future MIND Walk, the project includes the establishment of a café area where visitors can purchase refreshments.
The café will also serve as a natural gathering place for organisations that will have access to the museum’s newly refurbished basement.
The basement is being designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment, where socially vulnerable groups and others can find community and support.
