DESCRIPTION
UNCONVENTIONAL SOLUTIONS, AMBITIOUS GOALS
Ripple Residence is an ambitious flagship residential project located in Nordhavn, Copenhagen.
The building is a six-storey timber structure that will provide owner-occupied homes for approximately 500 residents, together with shared facilities and a limited number of working spaces at ground-floor level.
The project goes beyond current best practice for low-carbon construction across programming, design, construction, operation and disassembly.
This includes challenging conventional assumptions regarding function and carbon emissions per resident, maximising the use of biogenic materials, implementing low-emission construction site operations, minimising waste, balancing operational capacity with consumption, and ensuring easy disassembly and reuse at end-of-life.
PART OF THE “4 TO 1 PLANET” INITIATIVE
The project is being delivered with careful consideration for the planet, society and project partnerships, and knowledge generated throughout the process will be shared to enable learning across the construction industry.
Ripple Residence forms part of the Housing Construction from the "4 to 1 Planet"-initiative, which aims to inspire and challenge material manufacturers, designers, contractors and developers.
Supported by Realdania and the Villum Foundation, the initiative seeks to reduce the climate impact of new residential construction in Denmark.
LCA AS A DESIGN PARAMETER
From the outset, the project has been driven by ambitious goals for reducing its overall carbon footprint.
To support these ambitions, our LCA specialists developed an in-house LCA tool that was implemented at a very early stage of the design process. The tool provides clear visualisations of the most effective opportunities for reducing carbon emissions and has enabled the project team to maintain a continuous focus on the initiatives that have the greatest impact on the building’s overall climate performance.
This approach enables the project’s climate impact to be continuously optimised, supporting informed decision-making and helping achieve the lowest possible carbon footprint while generating a measurable positive effect for the planet.
