A NEW SETTING FOR THE COMMUNITY
Vejle Libraries are being transformed into a new culture house that will accommodate library services, civic functions, performance activities, music and cultural life, with a strong focus on flow, integration of indoor and outdoor functions, movement and space for everyone.
The transformation into a cultural centre is guided by four key values. Vejle Culture House must:
Connect the city – Create community across different groups – Serve as a cultural centre – Be a sustainable and flexible building
Based on these values, the existing building is being transformed and extended with two smaller additions, creating an architectural expression that reflects the project's sustainability ambitions and circular design principles.
NEW SPACE COMPLEMENTS THE EXISTING BUILDING
A total of 600 new m² will be combined with the existing 5,600 m², which will be transformed in accordance with sustainability objectives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint through the preservation and activation of existing building components, the use of biogenic materials and optimised energy consumption.
The façades will be constructed using reclaimed aluminium panels and timber, incorporating upcycled materials and emphasising circular material choices.
This creates a building that connects its historic context with future multifunctional use.
A BUZZING HUB OF ACTIVITY
The multi-purpose hall serves as the engine of the culture house’s activities and cultural dissemination. It is a high-ceilinged and flexible space featuring a retractable telescopic seating system, blackout facilities and direct access to storage and backstage areas. Two large sliding doors transform the hall into an outdoor stage, allowing the surrounding park to become part of the audience experience. The space is well suited to concerts, cinema screenings, theatre performances and civic events.
In everyday use, the building will be filled with activity and movement. Music rooms adjacent to the café bring sound and life right out into the forecourt, while the children's area includes small stages for storytelling and performances. The atrium’s stepped seating areas provide a setting for readings, pop-up events and community gatherings.
Everyone is welcome to participate without prerequisites – from children’s playful learning experiences to adult communities and spontaneous activities in the foyer and café.
